Detail:

During the session, based upon a case study drawing upon Domestic Homicide Reviews from around the region, learners will explore the ways coercive controlling abusers use a range of control tactics to entrap victims and their families in personal life. Learners will share their experiences of how to support victims more effectively and help those victims, their families and friends identify the presence of coercive control.

Objectives: By the end of this lesson, the learners will be better able to:

  • Understand Domestic Abuse with particular emphasis on Coercive & Controlling behaviour and how it manifests in behaviours such as: Intimidation, belittling, degradation, stalking and surveillance to create a ‘micro regulation of everyday life’ for victims and their families.
  • Identify and interpret behaviours exhibited by both Domestic Abuse victims and perpetrators to help identify DA and assess risk, including understanding the impact of separation on risk
  • Identify the risks to children living within Domestic Abuse households and the importance of building a trusting relationship with the non-abusing parent.
  • Identify how coercive and controlling abusers prevent victims from engaging with agencies and how best to respond to victims of Domestic Abuse in that context.
  • Identify how to ensure perpetrators are held accountable for their abusive behaviour.
  • Recognise how to use the learning in improved practice.
