The course provides an introduction to what Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) are and ways that these can impact upon people across their life course. The course takes approximately 50 minutes to complete. This course was funded by the Home Office and developed as a collaboration between the WM Police and Crime Commissioner, the WM Violence Prevention Alliance, the WMCA and Barnardo’s.

Objectives:

  • To be able to identify adverse experiences that can impact on a child's development and their response to stress.
  • To gain a basic understanding of the importance of healthy brain development in a child’s early years and the potential impacts of toxic stress.
  • To gain a basic understanding that experiencing adversity in childhood can have a significant impact over a person’s life course resulting in ill health, poor wellbeing and in some cases premature death.
  • To gain a basic understanding of resilience and protective factors in relation to ACEs.
  • To gain a basic understanding of the use of a ‘trauma lens’.
