Detail:

Domestic abuse and Gypsy/Traveller communities – Never Going to Beat You

You will be required to watch a video prior to the session which will be available between 9am – 11am on the day and the session will commence at 11am – 12.30pm. Further instructions will be circulated prior the session.

Sandwell has commissioned the Traveller Movement to provide the “Never Going to Beat You” training following the learning from a Sandwell Domestic Homicide Review (DHR) where a young traveller woman was murdered by her partner. The DHR identified that there was limited understanding of the additional risks and specific barriers facing domestic abuse victims from the Irish Traveller community and this training will provide important information for frontline workers who are working with adults; children and families including those from gypsy traveller communities.

The Traveller Movement have co-produced and featured in an amazing play now adapted to a film called ‘Never Going To Beat You’. As part of this training session you will be given an opportunity to view the educational film. The training that follows will use many of the scenarios seen in the film as part of the training workshop.

The training is very powerful and delivered by survivors of abuse, Gypsy and Traveller women. You will gain a unique insight, helping you to understand the barriers and safeguarding issues to be aware of when working with these communities.
This training is vital when engaging with women from the Traveller and Gypsy communities who are experiencing abuse.

Objectives:
This training will equip and enable people to develop their understanding of abuse and its impacts. It will assist in building confidence and positive relations and appropriate responses. It will enable professionals to engage and work effectively with Gypsy and Irish Traveller communities. You should already have completed generic domestic abuse training prior to undertaking this specific training relating to Gypsy/Traveller communities.
